The refinery leadership recognized the importance of achieving world-class efficiency and initiated the development of a sustainable continuous improvement (CI) culture to accomplish this goal. The initiative had three primary objectives:
During phase one of the initiative, we conducted a series of structured brainstorming sessions and formed three working groups to implement the most promising ideas. In phase two, we helped to create a new sub-department within the Commercial department with the goal to develop and deploy a CI system at the refinery. In phase three we facilitated the development of CI processes and a new motivation system, which were documented in a series of standards and guidelines. Finally, during the course of the project hundreds of employees and managers were trained and coached to ensure successful implementation.
The impact of the initiative was significant, with 232 ideas collected and 53 “quick” performance improvement projects implemented.
The initiative resulted in a total economic effect of $260 million over 24 months.
